Introduction to the G430
- The Garmin G430 is a fully IFR capable, TSO 145/146
GPS unit.
- Note: This presentation shall not be discussing IFR
operations.
- Includes VHF comms, Nav radios and a GPS
receiver
Important
- In order to use the 430 as a primary means of
navigation, it must be up to date
- To check whether it is up to date, ensure that no
items on the screen are coloured yellow
- This screen will appear during the Power On Self
Test process

Flight Plan Basics
- Rather than pressing
Direct To

leg, it is easier to enter a flight plan on the ground before
departure
- These plans can be saved in the internal
memory
- Whether day or night VFR, always enter a flight
plan as secondary to your written flight plan

location) right knobs to enter the identifier of the departure waypoint,

Using the Direct-To
Function
Overview of Direct-To
- Instead of entering a whole flight plan when, for
example, ATC says
track direct to SMOKA
, one can simply tell the
GPS to go Direct-To that waypoint.
- Direct-To can be activated from the Map, or to take
a pilot direct to a point in a loaded flight plan
